There seem to be a lot of books about bio-inspiration to engineering and explaining wildlife through physics, so I'm not sure which one to choose. I guess it's called biomimetics.

It depends on your comfort level with both physics and biology. I have read and recommend these:

http://www.amazon.com/Life-Moving-Fl...+moving+fluids
http://www.amazon.com/Iridescences-P...ct+iridescence

I suspect this book is also excellent:
