Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around a numerical riddle involving unconventional addition operations, where standard arithmetic does not seem to apply. Participants are attempting to decipher the underlying pattern or rule governing the equations presented.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants are questioning the reasoning behind the results of the addition problems, with some seeking clarification on how certain answers were derived. There is also a discussion about the significance of the highest digit in the numbers involved.

Discussion Status

The conversation is ongoing, with some participants providing hints and others expressing confusion. There is a mention of a related thread, indicating that multiple interpretations and approaches are being explored without a clear consensus.

Contextual Notes

Participants are considering the implications of different numerical bases, specifically referencing a potential base change to nine, which may influence the interpretation of the addition problems.

3762 + 8271 = 13143

can you please tell me how you got this? explain what you did?

does anyone know about this?

there is a thread on it.

LakeMountD,

"can you please tell me how you got this? explain what you did?"

No, but I'll give you some hints.

What's the highest digit in any of the numbers (including my answer)?

8, what does that have to do with anything?

LakeMountD,

"8, what does that have to do with anything?"

A lot. If I made up a list of a million more addition problems like the one you asked about, the highest digit in all of them would be 8 too.

A hint: What might have happened (in math) if people all had six fingers or 8 fingers instead of 10 fingers?
