Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the behavior of electrons in relation to the nucleus, specifically questioning whether electrons spin around the nucleus and what values, if any, can be assigned to this behavior. The scope includes conceptual and theoretical aspects of quantum mechanics.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks if electrons spin around the nucleus and if there is a known value for this spin.
  • Another participant states that in quantum mechanics, electrons do not have a defined trajectory but rather a probability distribution for their location, suggesting they can "jump" between measurements.
  • A different participant comments on the term "spin," arguing that it is misleading and that electron movement is chaotic, with statistical methods being the best approach to describe it.
  • A participant reiterates the initial question about electron spin and suggests reading additional resources for more context.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the nature of electron behavior, with no consensus reached on whether electrons can be said to "spin" around the nucleus or what that implies.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved assumptions regarding the definitions of "spin" and "trajectory" in the context of quantum mechanics, as well as the implications of statistical descriptions of electron behavior.

Do the electrons spin around the nuclues?
If so, do we know the value?

If you use quantum mechanics, then there is no trajectory, but only the probability of find the electron at a given point (in other word it can jump randomly from a measurement to the other)...

"Spin" is not a fortunate term. They mode chaotically and the best we can do about their movement is statistics...

Ahh, here we go again. Good question though...Since this forum is very well prepared, i suggest you read the 'five "socalled"easy pieces post' at the end of this link:https://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=43685&page=4
