Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the simplification of expressions involving subtraction, specifically the expression x - x - x. Participants explore whether there is a way to simplify such expressions similarly to how addition can be simplified.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Mathematical reasoning

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions whether x - x - x can be simplified, drawing a comparison to the simplification of x + x + x as 3x.
  • Another participant suggests that x - x equals 0 and presents the idea that x - x can be expressed as x + (-x), noting that -x is equivalent to (-1)*x.
  • A different participant proposes using exponents to represent repeated subtraction, asking for a simpler way to express subtracting a number multiple times.
  • One participant provides a simplified expression for repeated subtraction, stating that x - 26 - 26 - 26 - 26 - 26 can be expressed as x - 5*26.
  • Another participant concludes that m - x - x - x - x can be simplified to m - (4x).

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants explore various approaches to simplifying subtraction, but there is no consensus on a single method or interpretation of the simplifications discussed.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the properties of subtraction and the representation of repeated operations are present but not explicitly stated. The discussion does not resolve the nuances of these assumptions.

Is there a way to simply x-x-x? I know that x+x+x can by simplifed as 3x, but what about subtraction? One would think that if multiplication is just a simplification of addition, then indeed, division is just a simplification of subtraction. I need to know this for an equation I have to make for a software  like always

Any help? x-x-x

Sure, what does x - x equal? Also, x - x = x + (-x). And notice that -x = (-1)*x.

It seems that I can just use exponents for this, so let me ask this insead.

I want to subtract m from x n amount of times. Let's say n = 5, m = 10, and x = 26.

x - 26-26-26-26-26

Isnt their a simpler way?

x - 26-26-26-26-26 = x - 5*26

x-x-x = -x

Ok, I got it all down.

m -x-x-x-x = m-(4x)

Thx a lot! :}
