Speed of light in different media

SUMMARY

The speed of light varies in different media due to their refractive indices. The refractive index can be calculated using the formula: refractive index of a medium = speed of light in vacuum / speed of light in that medium. The speed of light in vacuum is 300,000 km/s. The approximate speeds of light in the specified media are: Air (approximately 299,700 km/s), Water (approximately 225,000 km/s), Diamond (approximately 124,000 km/s), and Perspex (approximately 200,000 km/s).

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of refractive index
  • Basic knowledge of light speed in vacuum
  • Familiarity with the formula for calculating speed in different media
  • Ability to perform unit conversions (m/s to km/s)
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the concept of refractive index in detail
  • Learn about the properties of light in different media
  • Explore the applications of light speed in optics
  • Investigate how temperature and pressure affect the speed of light in various materials
USEFUL FOR

Students studying physics, educators teaching optics, and anyone interested in the properties of light and its behavior in different materials.

Light is not my most favouite topic, but I am forced to do it at school !

Anyway, my homework was to find the refracting index of light in water, air, diamond and perspex. But they said we have to show the working out ! :bugeye:

So can anyone please tell me the speed of light in :-
(i) Air
(ii) Water
(iii) Diamond
(iv) Perspex
This is urgent !
I require it in km/s.
Thanks !

First look for refractive indexes of all the mediums you referred above.

then refractive index of a medium= speed of light in vacuum/speed of light in that medium

Speed of light in vacuum = 300000000 m/s

vrus,

So can anyone please tell me the speed of light in :-

(i) Air
(ii) Water
(iii) Diamond
(iv) Perspex

Here are the answers:

(i) google: speed of light in air
(ii) google: speed of light in water
(iii) google: speed of light in diamond
(iv) google: speed of light in Perspex
