For a given volume of a semiconductor and a metal - which of these then has the highest fermi energy? The semiconductor has more electrons per volume but I assume that the fermi level when talked about normally is the fermi level of the free electrons - right? So since there are only few free electrons in a semiconductor at low temperatures I should assume the fermi level is much greater for metals. Is that true?
