A question on China and Taiwan

In summary, China and Taiwan have a complex relationship, with both sides claiming to be the legitimate government of all of China. This disagreement stems from the Chinese Civil War and the different political ideologies of the two sides. While people can travel between China and Taiwan, there are restrictions and regulations. Most countries view China as the sole legitimate government, but many maintain unofficial ties with Taiwan. There is a possibility of reunification, but it would require significant changes on both sides, which currently seems unlikely.

Why didn't Chinese comminists attacked and occupied the Formoza island after they had conquered the China mainland? Formal name of Taiwan is Republic of China, but it is strange that everbody understand big China from Republic of China. If formal name Republic of China is Taiwan informal? I know the island the country established on is called as Formoza.

Best Regards.

1. What is the relationship between China and Taiwan?

China and Taiwan have a complex relationship, with both sides claiming to be the legitimate government of all of China. However, since the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, Taiwan has been a de facto independent country while China regards Taiwan as a part of its territory.

2. Why is there a disagreement between China and Taiwan?

The disagreement between China and Taiwan stems from the Chinese Civil War and the different political ideologies of the two sides. The Chinese Communist Party, which currently governs China, believes in a one-party socialist system, while Taiwan follows a democratic system.

3. Can people travel freely between China and Taiwan?

Yes, people can travel between China and Taiwan, but there are restrictions and regulations. Chinese citizens need a permit to travel to Taiwan, while Taiwanese citizens are allowed to travel to China as tourists but not for business or work purposes.

4. How do other countries view the China-Taiwan relationship?

Most countries officially recognize China as the sole legitimate government and do not have official diplomatic relations with Taiwan. However, many countries maintain unofficial ties with Taiwan and have economic and cultural exchanges with both China and Taiwan.

5. Is there a possibility of reunification between China and Taiwan?

There is always a possibility of reunification between China and Taiwan, but it would require significant political and social changes on both sides. Currently, the Taiwanese government and its people are not in favor of reunification under China's terms, and China has not shown any signs of compromising on its stance on Taiwan's status.
