Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the differences between other galaxies and our own Milky Way, exploring various aspects such as shape, size, star count, and interactions with other galaxies. Participants also consider methods for measuring galaxy sizes and the smallest known galaxies.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants note differences in shape, size, star count, location, and interactions with other galaxies.
  • One participant compares the differences between galaxies to the differences between everyday objects, suggesting a fundamental similarity in the nature of comparison.
  • Another participant asserts that galaxies differ in almost every aspect possible.
  • A question is raised about how to measure the size of a galaxy compared to the Milky Way, specifically inquiring about the smallest known galaxy.
  • A later reply discusses measuring galaxy size using Doppler shift to find distance and measuring angular size, while acknowledging ongoing debate regarding these methods.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express various viewpoints on the differences between galaxies, with no consensus on specific aspects or measurement methods. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best approaches to measure galaxy sizes.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations related to the definitions of size and distance, as well as unresolved debates about measurement techniques.

How does one telephone differ from another? One car from another? It's the same kind of thing, if I'm not mistaken.

They differ in almost every aspect possible.

Is there a way to measure how big or small a galaxy is compared to ours? What is the smallest galaxy we know of?

With the caveat that there is still a little debate about it, using doppler shift to find distance (there are other ways for closer galaxies) and measuring the angular size will give the actual size.
