Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around building robots, particularly for beginners who are interested in creating simple robotic systems. Participants share their experiences, resources, and concerns regarding programming and budgeting for robot construction.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses interest in building a non-humanoid robot that can perform tricks, mentioning concerns about programming and budget constraints, and inquires about the easiest electronics options between the stamp chip and PIC.
  • Another participant suggests looking at kits available at Maplins as a resource for beginners.
  • A different participant recommends visiting roboticsindia.com, noting that it has a community of builders and additional resources.
  • One participant shares a nostalgic experience of creating basic toy robots as a child, expressing a desire to build a more functional robot in the future.
  • A participant reiterates the suggestion to check roboticsindia.com, highlighting its usefulness and abundance of information.
  • Another participant recounts their experience making a robot arm for a science fair using inexpensive materials, emphasizing creativity in sourcing parts.
  • A participant mentions ordering a specific expandable robot kit and seeks feedback from others about it.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the usefulness of various resources and kits for beginners, but there is no consensus on the best approach or specific components to use, reflecting a range of experiences and preferences.

Contextual Notes

Participants express varying levels of experience and knowledge, which may influence their recommendations and concerns. The discussion does not resolve the best programming options or specific kit recommendations.

Who May Find This Useful

Beginners interested in robotics, hobbyists looking for project ideas, and those seeking resources for building simple robotic systems.

Has anyone built one? not a humanoid, but some thing that can do a few
tricks, i want to have a go, but the programming side worries me and i have
limited cash, some kits use electronics based on the stamp chip others the
pic, which is the easiest, i want to design my own mechanics using servo
motors for motion, i can build electronic circuits from scratch if needed.

Go to roboticsindia.com. Quite a few people build robots there. I'm sure there are other sites too.

I've only played around with basic robotics. When I was a kid I took motors and made toy robots that rolled along, would stop and swing their arms, but they really couldn't do anything. Always wanted to make one though. Good luck with your project.

Thanks Sid, that is a great site with loads of info, just what i was looking for.

i made a robot arm for the science fair once. it was made of a desk lamp and some pulleys. the hand was made of some strange test tube holding device with fiber optics in the clamps that held the tubes. i picked up the pieces at a craft/part shop for pretty cheap

I have ordered this kit for a start, it is expandable with lots of extras

What do you guys think.
