Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the learning curve associated with MATLAB, particularly in the context of a research project involving solving ordinary differential equations (ODEs) related to macromolecular drug flow. Participants share their experiences and insights regarding the ease or difficulty of learning MATLAB, especially for those with no prior programming experience.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that MATLAB does not have a steep learning curve, especially for those familiar with C syntax.
  • Another participant describes MATLAB as a blend of C, Fortran, and shell scripting, indicating that knowledge of any two of these languages would facilitate learning MATLAB.
  • A participant expresses concern about the difficulty of learning MATLAB without prior programming experience, questioning whether it will be particularly challenging.
  • In response, another participant acknowledges that while MATLAB itself may not be difficult, programming in general can be challenging, especially for beginners.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants appear to have mixed views on the difficulty of learning MATLAB. Some believe it is manageable for those with certain programming backgrounds, while others express concern about the challenges faced by complete beginners. No consensus is reached regarding the overall difficulty.

Contextual Notes

Some participants' claims depend on prior programming knowledge, which may not be universally applicable. The discussion does not resolve the specific challenges faced by individuals with no programming experience.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in learning MATLAB for research purposes, particularly those involved in computational modeling or drug flow studies, may find this discussion relevant.

How difficult is MATLAB to learn as I am soon to begin a research project that is supposedly going to require MATLAB to solve ODEs related to macromolecular drug flow.

MATLAB does not have a steep learning curve. If you know C syntax, you should be able to learn it fairly quickly. There are a couple of tutorials out there that you can follow to get going.

I found these pretty quickly not too long ago.

Matlab is a cross between C, Fortran, and a shell. If you know any two of the
three its very easy. If not, it will be easy once you solve some simple excercises.

If you have never programmed before, it will be an odessy through the bowels of
Hades.

I have never programmed before so is it really going to be that difficult?

No, not really. But it will not be easy either. Matlab is easy- programming is
difficult.
