Design a Container to Survive a 15 Meter Drop

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on designing a container capable of surviving a 15-meter drop using limited materials, including 5 paper clips, 2 rubber bands, 4 flexible straws, and aluminum foil. The design must allow for easy opening and closing for egg inspection and fit within a 30 cm cubed box before the drop. Suggestions emphasize creating a lightweight parachute and a cushioning mechanism for the egg, which are common solutions discussed in similar threads.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics principles related to impact and drop dynamics
  • Familiarity with lightweight materials and their properties
  • Knowledge of basic engineering design concepts
  • Experience with crafting and assembling simple structures
NEXT STEPS
  • Research techniques for creating effective parachute designs using lightweight materials
  • Explore methods for cushioning fragile objects during impact
  • Investigate the properties of aluminum foil in structural applications
  • Learn about the physics of free fall and impact forces
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for students, hobbyists, and engineers interested in physics, design challenges, and creating protective structures for fragile items during drops.

Hey, I know there are already many of this threads, but I checked them all out and none can help me in my project. Well, in my project I have limited amount of materials, and I have already tried out various designs with no success, so any help would be great. Here are the details:

Drop altitude 15 meters.
Materials:
5 paper clips (2 large, 3 small)
2 rubber bands
1 30cm string
4 flexible straws
1 band aid
2 tissue papers (regulation size sheets, no scent)
1 30x30cm aluminium foil
2fts of scoth tape (adhesive purpose only)
2 half sheets of paper

Design specification:

  • The design must allow easy opening and closing for egg inspection
  • Before the container is dropped, it must fit into a 30 cm. cubed box

Thanks in advance

These are all the same. Build a lightweight parachute, and a lightweight cushion for the egg. The other threads cover the same stuff.
