SUMMARY

Hurricane Katrina has had a significant impact on the softwood lumber trade between the US and Canada. Despite expectations of increased demand for lumber due to rebuilding efforts in New Orleans, actual demand remains low at this time. Contractors are unlikely to purchase more lumber until contracts are finalized and funds are allocated, which may not occur until several months post-hurricane. Consequently, a noticeable increase in demand is anticipated around Christmas 2023 as rebuilding efforts gain momentum.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of the softwood lumber market dynamics
  • Knowledge of post-disaster rebuilding processes
  • Familiarity with US-Canada trade agreements
  • Awareness of economic indicators affecting construction demand
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the impact of natural disasters on construction supply chains
  • Investigate US-Canada softwood lumber trade agreements and tariffs
  • Explore economic forecasting related to the construction industry post-disaster
  • Learn about the timeline of rebuilding efforts in disaster-affected areas
USEFUL FOR

Construction industry professionals, lumber suppliers, trade analysts, and anyone involved in post-disaster rebuilding efforts will benefit from this discussion.

How has (and will) Katrina affect the softwood lumber industry between the US and Canada? One would imagine the US is looking to purchase more lumber after New Orleans, but for some reason there doesn't seem to be too much demand.

I wouldn't expect contractors to start purchasing more wood in anticipation of this so soon...when the contracts are all done and money has changed hands the demand for lumber will go up...

I would guess it's going to be several months before rebuilding actually starts, so the impact for contractors and vendors (and engineers) won't be seen until around Christmas.
