SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the operation of a model train transformer, specifically addressing the voltage across the tracks and the transformer's type. The calculations reveal that the voltage present across the tracks is 5.6V, derived from the equation I'V'=I"V". The transformer is classified as a step-down transformer since the secondary voltage (5.6V) is lower than the primary voltage (120V). A correction was noted regarding the current value used in the calculations, which should be 0.35A instead of 0.25A.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Ohm's Law
  • Basic knowledge of transformer operation
  • Familiarity with AC voltage and current concepts
  • Ability to perform algebraic calculations involving voltage and current
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the principles of transformer design and efficiency
  • Learn about different types of transformers, including step-up and step-down
  • Explore practical applications of transformers in model railroading

Hi,

My Question:

A model train transformer plugs into 120-V ac and draws 0.35A while supplying 7.5A to the train. (a)What voltage is present across the tracks? (b) is the transformer step-up or step down?

Work

Part A:

I'V'=I"V"
(0.25A)(120V)=(7.5A)(V")
((0.25A)(120V))/(7.5A)=V"
V"=5.6V

Part B:

Step-down, because the secondary voltage is lower than the primary voltage.

Is it correct:confused:

Thank You:smile:

You are correct. (Note typo in your part A equations: you wrote "0.25A" instead of "0.35A".)
