SUMMARY

NH4NO3, or ammonium nitrate, is classified as an ionic compound due to its composition of NH4+ and NO3- ions. While the bonds within the ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-) ions are covalent, the overall structure of NH4NO3 is ionic. This distinction is crucial for understanding the nature of chemical bonding in compounds.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of ionic and covalent bonds
  • Familiarity with chemical nomenclature
  • Knowledge of ion formation and charge
  • Basic principles of chemical compounds
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the differences between ionic and covalent compounds
  • Learn about ionization and the formation of polyatomic ions
  • Explore examples of common ionic compounds
  • Investigate the properties of ammonium nitrate in various applications
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, educators, and anyone interested in understanding chemical bonding and compound classification.

Classify each of the following as ionic or covalent. I did all but I am not really sure about this one. NH4NO3 I put covalent. Is this correct? Thanks

Well no because NH4NO3 is comprised of a NH4+ ion and a NO3- ion. The bonds in the ions themselves, however, are covalent, but the answer you are looking for is ionic.
