Center for Space Nuclear Research (CSNR)

Located in Idaho Falls, the CSNR is operated by the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) in collaboration with the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). The CSNR will be a focus for engaging university scientists in research and development of advanced space nuclear systems including space power and propulsion systems and radioisotope power generators. CSNR will create opportunities for university researchers to collaborate with their counterparts at NASA, INL and other DOE Labs, and industry in projects and initiatives to advance nuclear technologies for space exploration and other space applications. The CSNR’s research program will cover both nuclear and non-nuclear elements and related sub-disciplines, e.g., materials, nucleonics, heat transfer, thermofluidynamics, structures, systems engineering, testing and diagnostics, etc. The Center will also establish and conduct a multidisciplinary education program in studies of space nuclear systems and related scientific and technical areas that uses a mix of classroom and research activities.

The Battelle Energy Alliance will team with the Universities Space Research Association (USRA), University of New Mexico (Institute for Space &nuclear Power Studies), and General Atomics (GA) to establish a Center for Space Nuclear Research (CSNR) at the Idaho National Laboratory that will support the space nuclear research and educational mission needs of the INL and reinvigorate research and education in space nuclear engineering within U.S. universities. The following near term activities are envisioned to be undertaken by USRA in support of the Center for Space Nuclear Research:

- Appoint a senior Center Director and establish an office in Idaho Falls (to be included in the Center for Advanced Energy Studies).
- Establish a Space Nuclear Research Working Group to assist USRA in the development and operation of the Center.
- Develop a funded university space nuclear research program with participation by INL scientists and engineers, and university faculty and students, and managed by CSNR.
- Develop and implement a university advanced design program focused on space nuclear research.
- Develop and manage proposals in response to NASA and other agency solicitations that involve INL, university and industry participation.
- Develop and manage other research, education, and public outreach programs and activities related to space nuclear research.
