What is Brine: Definition and 18 Discussions

Brine is a high-concentration solution of salt (NaCl) in water (H2O). In diverse contexts, brine may refer to salt solutions ranging from about 3.5% (a typical concentration of seawater, on the lower end of solutions used for brining foods) up to about 26% (a typical saturated solution, depending on temperature). Brine forms naturally due to evaporation of ground saline water but it is also generated in the mining of sodium chloride. Brine is used for food processing and cooking (pickling and brining), for de-icing of roads and other structures, and in a number of technological processes. It is also a by-product of many industrial processes, such as desalination, so it requires wastewater treatment for proper disposal or further utilization (fresh water recovery).

I Optimizing homemade ice cream freezing with brine

This question involves a bit of background, so please be patient. I understand that the heat absorbed by ice's phase change from solid to liquid is much greater than the amount that results from the difference in temperature of the ice and the ice cream batter. So the primary cooling effect is...

Medical Can bad bacteria form on the sauerkraut under the brine

Also does bad bacteria(mold) forms on the weight(i.e use to submerged the cabbage) ,on the portion that is above the brine. I use glass paper weight, as I think they only form on food surface. My thought, sauerkraut is safe, as long it is submerged inside the brine and mold formation is only...

Calculating Specific Gravity of Brine at High Pressure and Temperature

Hello all, I am currently trying to convert brine salinity values in ppm to the corresponding brine density. My understanding is that I can do that using ppm * SG = mg/L . However I do not know how to get the Specific Gravity (SG) of my brine. The data I try to convert has a minimum value of...

Material of Construction for hot brine (NaCl) solution

What's a suitable Material of construction for equipment handling hot brine (NaCl) solutions? Temperature is max approx. 100 C. I'm conflicted if or not SS316 works? I looked up an old handbook and it reported a corrosion rate of 0.2 mm/year (@80 C) which seems not too bad to me. But I've...

    Brine electrolysis with alluminum

I did an electrolysis with alluminum eletrodes, the electrolyte was NaCl, After completing it the left over was a gresyish precipitate (I assume aluminum hydroxide), I put most of it for evaporating in a cup, the rest evaporated leaving a jell, then later crystals. are the crystals NaCl which is...

Electrolysis of brine produced white stuff.

As a casual experiment I was seeing whether I could make hydrogen from sodium hydroxide, aluminium and water. Rather than buy sodium hydroxide or go through a load of cleaning products to find it, I thought it would be much more fun to produce it through electrolysis. I set it up, and the...

Brine Experiment: Reduce Shoveling with DIY DOT Solution

So we're about to get a decent snowstorm and being a lazy bastard + engineer, I'm considering an experiment with a brine solution (the way the DOT does it) to see if I can reduce my shoevling requirement. I have some normal rock-salt and I'm going to mix some with water and spray it on a...
