Adolescence (from Latin adolescere 'to grow up') is a transitional stage of physical and psychological development that generally occurs during the period from puberty to legal adulthood (age of majority). Adolescence is usually associated with the teenage years, but its physical, psychological or cultural expressions may begin earlier and end later. For example, puberty now typically begins during preadolescence, particularly in females. Physical growth (particularly in males) and cognitive development can extend into the early twenties. Thus, age provides only a rough marker of adolescence, and scholars have found it difficult to agree upon a precise definition of adolescence.A thorough understanding of adolescence in society depends on information from various perspectives, including psychology, biology, history, sociology, education, and anthropology. Within all of these perspectives, adolescence is viewed as a transitional period between childhood and adulthood, whose cultural purpose is the preparation of children for adult roles. It is a period of multiple transitions involving education, training, employment, and unemployment, as well as transitions from one living circumstance to another. The end of adolescence and the beginning of adulthood varies by country. Furthermore, even within a single nation, state or culture, there can be different ages at which an individual is considered mature enough for society to entrust them with certain privileges and responsibilities. Such privileges and responsibilities include driving a vehicle, having legal sexual relations, serving in the armed forces or on a jury, purchasing and drinking alcohol, purchase of tobacco products, voting, entering into contracts, finishing certain levels of education, marriage, and accountability for upholding the law. Adolescence is usually accompanied by an increased independence allowed by the parents or legal guardians, including less supervision as compared to preadolescence.
In studying adolescent development, adolescence can be defined biologically, as the physical transition marked by the onset of puberty and the termination of physical growth; cognitively, as changes in the ability to think abstractly and multi-dimensionally; or socially, as a period of preparation for adult roles. Major pubertal and biological changes include changes to the sex organs, height, weight, and muscle mass, as well as major changes in brain structure and organization. Cognitive advances encompass both increment in knowledge and in the ability to think abstractly and to reason more effectively. The study of adolescent development often involves interdisciplinary collaborations. For example, researchers in neuroscience or bio-behavioral health might focus on pubertal changes in brain structure and its effects on cognition or social relations. Sociologists interested in adolescence might focus on the acquisition of social roles (e.g., worker or romantic partner) and how this varies across cultures or social conditions. Developmental psychologists might focus on changes in relations with parents and peers as a function of school structure and pubertal status. Some scientists have questioned the universality of adolescence as a developmental phase, arguing that traits often considered typical of adolescents are not in fact inherent to the teenage years.
Let's say that we have XYZ TV channel, which offers wide variety of programs; from cartoons for children to telenovelas to live sport coverage and news. However, the rating agency for TV programs and films (like ESRB for games) rated all such program on teen (suitable for age 13 and up). The...

I run a Maker group for teens in Florida at the Pensacola MESS Hall. We are building a T.E.A. Laser powered by a Wimshurst machine along the lines of a Rimstar project we found on YouTube. But, we have some questions about the laser it will produce:

I saw a video of Jack on Upworthy this morning. Interesting kid.
I read several articles about him. Someone at Forbes said they didn't include him in their "30 under 30" list, because he'd never published in a peer reviewed journal, nor were his numerical claims correct.
I thought that...

DAYTON, Ohio (CN) - Dayton police "mistook" a mentally handicapped teenager's speech impediment for "disrespect," so they Tasered, pepper-sprayed and beat him and called for backup from "upward of 20 police officers" after the boy rode his bicycle home to ask his mother for help, the boy's mom...
The teenager, Ariana Iacono, belongs to the Church of Body Modification. Should "religious" items of clothing and jewelry be forbidden in non-parochial schools?

I just saw on the news that John Travolta's teenaged son died of a siezure, which he had a history of. Whatever one might think of Mr. Travolta as an actor, or a (non-intrusive) Scientologist, or anything else, nobody should ever have to witness the death of an offspring.
I happen to like his...

The beauty pageant is on tv tonight. I can't believe that in this day and age we still have beauty pageants for women.

The sad news is that the only other carrier it will work with is T-Mobile, which is on the same type of antiquated, slower than molasses network.

Here's the situation:
I have a friend, who just told me that one of her good friends is pregnant at 19. The part that really strikes me is that she sounds as if she is happy about it, and is cheerfully picking out names and things.
I recommended that she buy her friend a book on teen...
In humans, what exactly will happen to a young teen if he/she does weed and alcohol? Like will their growth stop such as their sex organs and their height and whatnot, or will their brain stop maturing or what? Which of the propaganda is true?
This is an interesting case I've been following on the news. I really wasn't sure which way it would go since he is a minor.

Ok so here's the situation, some 13 year old gets pregnant and wants to have an abortion. Someone shoots this statement at me " Are you also aware that at 13, her body is VERY likely not physically equipped to be able to bring up the baby, and it will be very difficult for it, and her, to...
My teen sent me these statistics regarding teen pregnancy, sex, abortion, after seeing a documentary film at Sundance, regarding one girls attempts to get sex ed at her High School, in Lubbock, Texas. There they have some practice where girls "marry their parents", and promise to not have sex...
It's somewhat generally accepted that teenage boys are jerks because of high testosterone levels. I just saw a program on TV about sex, and there was a chart showing average testosterone levels as men age. The program pointed out that a man's sexual peak based on testosterone levels is not at...
