Physics In retrospect, are you glad with the choice to have done a postdoc?

It was a big mistake for me. I should have done an internship during my PhD in the industry, and switched to the industry directly. But my wise supervisor didn't care to discuss anything concerning my careers paths, so, I chose poorly, and now I am paying the price.

    Employer contribution from salary

As far as I know, what you are talking about (if you are married, have kids, ... etc) is considered when filling the tax forms at the end of each tax year. If you owe taxes, you pay them. But from the salary, there is a well-define tax rate scale depending on the annual income. The problem with...

    Employer contribution from salary

That's what I did. But they said they cannot calculate it because this is personal information?! But I am the person of concern. This is not the first offer I received, and every time I ask about the net salary, I receive a direct and clear answer, except for this one. I can use online tax...

    Employer contribution from salary

I know it is 50/50, but from what I know, the employer contribution is added in the background so the employee receives a gross salary exactly as offered. It is misleading and confusing when the employer contribution is deducted from the employee salary, especially there is no clear explanation...

    Employer contribution from salary

The offer is from a European country. I am not sure if this is how offers are given in Europe. In my last job in Canada, I only paid employee contribution and income tax (as far as I am aware of). I didn't have anything to do with the employer contribution. When I asked about my net salary after...

    Employer contribution from salary

In general, is the employer contribution (I am not sure what that is) deducted from the employee salary? Is it normal to receive an offer saying that the income tax, and the employee and employer contributions will be deducted from that salary offer?

Job Skills I finally got my bachelor's degree in physics, now what?

Prioritize getting a job. Advanced degrees won't solve the problem of employment. There is a gap between academia and the industry. It's either universities don't prepare students well, or employers don't value the skills graduates have. I think it is both.

Job Skills Should I Do a PhD? Informed Opinion & Relevant Considerations

In my personal experience, a PhD is waste of time and money if it's for financial reasons. Maybe a PhD in few fields can help, like in machine learning these days, but for most fields and jobs it's not beneficial at best. Sometimes it works the opposite direction: you can become unemployed, as...

Are programming interviews effective these days?

Are interviews effective in general? Is there a strong correlation between interview performance and job performance?

Can random, unguided processes produce a rational brain?

It obviously can. But the brain hasn't evolved to do logic and understand the laws of physics. These are by-products. It has evolved for humans to survive better.

Chemistry Volunteer/unpaid work to build skills

I agree. However, where I see the problem is not the school, but rather the employers. In school, you learn the theoretical fundamentals, and a way of thinking, which are important, but employers care only about money, and need employees to produce from time 0 with 0 investment. I read once that...

Is it normal for professors to allow cheat-sheets in tests?

Yes some professors have done it before in some classes. Usually one notebook page both side is allowed to write down the equations and formulas. The exam should not be a memory test.

FB Friend Suggestion: Privacy Violation or Digital Age Necessity?

That's correct. That's why I am off Facebook. I can live without it. But the point I was trying to make from this whole thread is that we need political decisions to contain these giants on how they use users' data. Their terms and conditions should be aligned with a well-defined privacy...

FB Friend Suggestion: Privacy Violation or Digital Age Necessity?

The problem with this reasoning is that the user doesn't have a choice. He/she either fully gives up their privacy, or don't use the application, and make yourself isolated. Twitter is a free application, too, but Facebook is very aggressive in what and how they do business. They are under...

FB Friend Suggestion: Privacy Violation or Digital Age Necessity?

For the record, I didn't log into any third party website via Facebook. As I mentioned before, I permanently deleted my previous Facebook account (Facebook added this feature recently. Before you couldn't do that. You could only deactivate your account), and didn't use any phone number in the...
