Reshma,
Its really aggravating to see 'moral policing' everywhere... a few days ago, there was an article in the local newspaper (Ahmedabad) talking about a high court judgement to stop various 'days' in colleges in Gujarat from being celebrated. And we all know what a big fuss is made about...
Well, I haven't seen girls being beaten, but cops in India do target couples. Its not possible for a girl to go out with a guy, especially in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The situation is far better in Gujarat and the south, though.
A friend of mine was thrown out of a garden by a cop once and her...
I know what you mean. The number of girls taking up engineering in my college are very few. Anyway, the number seems to be increasing. Medicine seemed to be the norm in my school too, but I decided to go in for Computer Engineering, much to the shock of my friends, who still think girls cannot...
Hi everyone,
I just happened to see this thread and thought I would comment because my parents had an arranged marriage. In our community, the boy, along with his family, goes and meets the girl and her family. The families talk to each other about the prospective marriage, while the boy and...
I originally asked this question because a friend of mine turned down a job offer because she would earn more than her boyfriend does and this would upset him. She took up another job which she is not interested in. I guess this does not happen much outside India.
Here, it is very rare to find...
BITS Pilani is great...since you weren't keen on any particular branch of engineering, I think it would be a great option.
But I'm a little confused. Do you have to do CIVIL/COMPUTERS/MECH/ELECTRONICS/IT and then an M.Sc. in Biological Sciences? What do the two have to do with each other...

Yes we are talking about 7 people dead. Would you go on and on about obesity if I mention disasters other than terrorist attacks? I could talk about the Tsunami. Or better still, something that happened in my city, an earthquake a few years ago in which more than 4000 people died, in which I saw...
Why only obesity? Why not other illnesses?
And by the way, i would neither want to be fat and unhealthy all my life nor die of a terrorist attack. Death by obesity is something you can control. I could have considered your point if you had said something like cancer.

I completely...
My heart goes out to everyone in London. Hope everybody's friends and families are safe. When will these terrorist attacks ever stop? It seems like every time the world recovers from one, there is another attack.

Thanks a lot everyone
This class I will be taking is a one-off thing. Its for the Talent Search for Physics being conducted for the World Year of Physics. But I intend to use Moonbear and Pattylou's suggestions. Thank you!

Hi everyone,
I have to take a physics class for eigth graders in a couple of days. I have done this a couple of times before but I always find that they hesitate a lot when it comes to answering questions and thinking on their own. Any suggestions from anybody with/without teaching experience...
What exactly is the Kater's Pendulum? How is it different from a simple pendulum and what are the advantages of using it to determine g?
Thanks,
Sunayana.

Well..its my first day in college in a few days. I would be lying if I said that I wasn't EXTREMELY nervous about it. :uhh: Does anyone have any funny/scary experiences on their first day of college to share?

I think the most admirable quality is your professionaism and work ethics. Thats why everyone from India wants to pursue atleast a post graduate degree in the U.S...to inculcate some of this into our own work.
As for the most detestable...well...maybe that America is thought of as the beginning...
Thank you for your commments everyone
I'd just like to say that I started this thread as a result of something I read on the WYP website ([PLAIN]www.wyp2005.org/overview.html[/URL]). I also interviewed the director of Institute for Plasma Research(in Ahmedabad, India), Prof. P.K.Kaw, and asked...
