What is the point of studying maths at a very high level?

I only learned advanced Math to help me think in a certain way (I like physics and I program applications on a computer). Training your brain to think in a logical manner is very useful application in my opinion and is a highly transferable skill.

    Math Fun Day!

How about something along the lines of an old Bagatelle type game? It would be easy to make. A piece of plywood with small nails hammered partly the way through it. A number of small balls Numbered slots at the bottom for the ball to drop into. You could have theme games like playing...

    News Civil war in Iraq

It may be a solution just to let them kill each other. I know it sounds a bit callus but if the hatred is insurmountable (neither side willing to accommodate the other for any reason) then what other choices are available? If the UN or any other country thinks it has a right to intervine...

What are the main contentions between Sunni's and Shiites? Is it similar to the problems between Protestants and Catholics? Some stupid differences in interperating a religious text? If it is then I've got no sympathy for them because I've have no tolorance for that kind of stupidity.

    Black hole - entrance theory

This isn't just from your statement. I've heard similar claims and I've wondered about it for years. I suspected it was because the explanation of matter falling into a BH was oversimplified to a high degree. I wasn't suggesting that matter doesn't enter the BH just that if the matter appeared...

    Black hole - entrance theory

This has always seemed flawed to me. If any matter that enters a BH would appear stationary at the horizon then surely, with the amount of matter that has previously fallen in, the BH would seize to be 'black' as it would appear to have a 'coating'/'shell' surrounding it.

Why do people misunderstand each other sometimes?

When I disagree with someone it is usually because I've thought long and hard about something and then drew my possible conclusions. If someone has come to a different conclusion I sometimes think that they obviously haven't thought things through in the degree that I have. This is obviously...

SpaceTiger's explanation covers a lot of ground and applies to most people (if not all). I get misunderstood all the time it seems. Mainly because the chain: 1) What I want to say 2) What I actually say 3) What the other person thinks I said 4) How the person interperates what...

I posted several definitions of Philosophy from the web to illustrate a point. I class myself as agnostic and so I probably see a lot more similarities between philosophy and religion than a person who is a devout believer, for example. I'm not sure what you mean by this?

I was speaking about 'either/or'. If intel had got 'reliable' information that an individual had a remote detonator on him OR a person was an actual walking bomb then the method of take-down would be the same. That news article said she counted the rounds as she was running away. Is that...

I'm sure you are aware that witnessess make bad witnessess. If there was 30 witnessess it would be unlikely that any of them would see the same thing. The trick, I think, is to listen to all of them and find the correlations. It takes a lot of training to observe details in a high stress situation.

News The Ultimate Loss of Civil Liberties: Innocent Man Shot Dead in UK

It's different if the shooter believed he was killing a suicide bomber or had a remote contolled detonator because he/she would be trying to destroy the brain to prevent reflex action therefore the amount of rounds would depend on whether the target is moving at all (keep firing until all...

    What's the purpose of life?

Why not? Too many people say "Why should I?" when faced with something to do when they should be asking "Why shouldn't I?". We ARE the sum of our experiences. The more we do the greater we are. -------- On a weirder note I've thought that the meaning of life was to tie up loose...

    What's the purpose of life?

I thought it might be: "Find out your good points and try to enhance them. Find out your bad points and try to reduce them. Be honest with yourself". It's something that'll last you a life time and if there's no meaning to life at least you'll become a better person (hopefully).
