I NEVER would have though about it like that. I was trying to make this resume "stand out" in the ATS ( Automated Tracking System). But I was not sure how effective it would show my education and skills versus my current position. I will try a slightly different order and work on the details.
Hello Everyone
I have recently been working at a construction department for my state ( I live in the USA). I have learned so many things from this job, but I am looking for something more related to electronics, programming, or technical consulting.
One of my points mentions creating...
I have applied to numerous jobs in multiple states ( I am in the United States). I think the problem is that I really do not have any industry contacts that can help. I can not find any recruiters or the ones I have tried did not work out.
I have been relentelessly searching for jobs and I have even called businesses and alumni. Unfortunately, I can not seem to find work ANYWHERE. I don't know if its my underwhelming resume or that I simply am doing something wrong. My network is not very vast. I have tried to reach out, but I...
I think that is a tad harsh Dr. Steve
I understand that the OP needs to make a serious career choice. However, I do believe that collegiate education is a pathway to furthering ones job prospects. I think the OP may need to considering looking up companies that hire Physics graduates or...
I understand what your going through. The difference is that I wish I had your GPA and optimism about Physics (although I have some nostalgia for it). The data entry jobs I found were more programming than business focused, however I did come across some heavy finance oriented analyst...
I have seen physics graduates choose to become K-12 teachers. I have seen physics graduates who actually work in oil and gas industry. There are a strong number of physics graduates who leave off to pursue careers in medicine or law. Some people even have the heart to pursue that elusive PhD...
I think is one of those post where I can help out. To the OP, have you ever thought about going back to graduate school as the others have suggested. You can always do another BS or go to a community college to get another degree. You don't seem disappointed with your school, just your major...
Thanks I appreciate the responses. I just feel like I went to a better ranked school in vain. I wish that I had went to the lower ranked school for my degree instead. As someone posted, it just doesn't feel like the rigor was worth it in the initial job search.
In my experience, it seems that going to a better (ie more rigorous) school is not worth it in the long run. I went to a state public university (I live in the US) than is well known for its science and engineering programs.
I earned my BS in Physics, but I was no longer interested in...
Okay. I can't edit the question so I will start a new thread. I apologize, I thought my thoughts were coherent enough when I started.
This thread can be deleted
I am referring to getting the same degree from a different university. I am also referring to the fact that not all in-state universities teach equally.
I am referring to the fact that by going to a more rigorous university, it is supposed to prepare you for the working world better. However, there are universities where the course work is much easier and the students still have good opportunities to get a job just as if they went to the more...
Why do people base a new employees skill set based solely on degree and not the program they attended. For example, engineering is considered to be a marketable field. However, not all engineering programs are created equal. I understand that elite institutions will be preferred over the...
Hey Everybody,
A while back I made a thread about being a BS Physics graduate trying to go back to school. After changing universities, I finally graduated this May with my MS in Engineering (Electrical). While searching for jobs, I noticed there is a dilemma regarding specific jobs. I don't...
Hello Greg
I understand EXACTLY how you feel. When you have time , look up BS Physics : Debate on Career in a google search and my thread should pop up. My story is different in that I started as an engineering major, switched into physics due the the rigor of the programs, and ended up...
My BS was in Physics and I am currently in a master's of engineering focusing in in electronics and materials.
On average, as already posted, most likely you will be required to take certain BS courses. In my case I entered a program that was VERY receptive of hard science students. They...
I really can't say anything that StatGuy did not mention. Only other option I can think of is that you can look into careers like becoming a nuclear technician or even obtaining a Masters of Nuclear Engineering via an online university (they seem to really like Physics types). I personally am...
No it was not a mistake. Granted I did not see the year, but the point was to let people know that they have options.
I think we get so caught up in our research and knowledge on career and academia that we forget there is still a person who is asking us something. And granted everybody has...
Sometimes people will come back and read old advice threads. I just feel like I need to be an encouraging force since I have been stressed out about similar situations in my academic career.
I am very realistic, but that does not mean I have to be dreary about every situation.
Okay. I have to speak up about this since it is slight pet peeve of mine. It is very possible for a Physics BS to find a bachelors/graduate program (brick&mortar or online) that is in an applied field. You do NOT have to resort to education as a job unless you either want to or if your...
I would like to comment that a graduate degree in Engineering, Atmospheric Science, or any Applied Science field is your best means of employment. That being said, a Physics BS can definitely do more than just teach. As others have said, look into studying to become an actuary or possibly...
Your advice is generally accurate ModusPwnd, I will only add that it may be a factor of your institution as well. I chose a different institution when I went to Grad School for Engineering and I am relatively happier. It may be rare, but some times location or the reputation of your institution...
To be fair, the strength of physics is that it can be used for advanced studies in fields where the BS may be irrelevant upon completion of advanced programs. Law and Medicine is the most obvious example of this. And most architects are now having to get advanced degrees to stay competitive...
Hey I felt I should add my 2 cents in if you don't mind. Look I got a Physics BS because I just sort of ... fell through the cracks at my Engineering program. And like you I had regrets by the end of graduation. Matter of fact the only thing that kept pushing me was thinking I may qualify...
Sorry for the wait, I found out the answer though. The truth is that even if you go beyond the 150% limit of classes attempted, you can still utilize the money that you did not spend of the $57000 limit for a 2nd Bachelors Degree. However, if you have not completed your 1st degree, You will...
You know its funny because usually I dislike Modus's tough style of speaking facts, but this time even I have to agree. I don't have an awesome BS Physics track record, but I understood that by the time I finished the degree, i wished I would have taken a slightly easier yet practical route...
I am still attending graduate school, I have two more semesters of coursework left, so my GPA can still increase (and most likely will given that I developed better study strategies since my first year.)
As for demographics, I am certainly not picky about job/intern locations. I want to work...
That's sounds like a great deal for the students who go there. My first school has industry contacts, but there is no built in co-op or intern program. Primarily it's up to the student to find their own opportunities, despite having a career center for guidance.
The university I'm currently at...
I have no problem with doing this, and I will be sure to mention this when I speak with my advisor or more likely the job placement center. I am not above taking a technician type job. I just have difficulty finding a company willing to give an fresh grad this opportunity
I know its been awhile. Any other suggestions would be of help. I have applied to way more than just 10 jobs. I really don't know what's wrong, I even have had a working engineer review my resume and give me some pointers. Sadly I think lacking internships is what hurts, but it is a catch 22...
It would not be very suprising if someone with a BCA had an easier time getting into a MCA program since they are directly related to each other. However, as with most fields, the fact that you have good interns and co-ops will matter a lot more than your BS once you have achieved your MCA...
My BS is in Physics and I had considered getting another BS in industrial engineering. However I have question that I can not find any direct answer on FAFSA website
I have accumulated more than 180 hours in my Bachelors Degree, going over the 150% limit for an undergraduate major. My appeal...
I understand what you are saying, and to be honest I never really wanted to major in physics. My first plans were not working out and I refused to get a technology degree (which may have been somewhat more employable at the big risk of limited grad school options ).
If the OP has a specific...
Being a programmer or software engineer is a possible option since their is not necessarily a standardized education for those positions. Just have to be adept at programming (which is usually self taught with enough dedication)
Forensic Science
Principal Antenna Engineer
Meteorologist...
I have joined student organizations before in engineering, and I don't really feel that it puts you a lot of direct contact with the right people unless you manage to work exclusively on project teams. Even with that, it still is a matter of finding someone who won't just tell you apply online...
Would you suggest working on Project or Thesis for Graduate School. My advisor has said he has not seen much discrimination between taking either option as for finding jobs. However, I feel that if I did a project, I would have a more enriching experience and possibly have something to speak...
I appreciate that, and I have even consider what some of my options might be outside of engineering. I would not mind working in a separate field such as financial analyst or mathematically modeling. However, I have a feeling these positions may possibly be more competitive.
I actually have read this article before. My only issues are that it seems to be focused on computer science related work and the real problem is that location for demand is absent.
I feel that there is a shortage of engineering workers in small distributed areas of the US and in certain...
Any idea as to the cause of 'proclaimed shortage'. And I am confident engineering has a bigger market than most liberal/fine art degrees. However this level of difficulty job searching has to based on more than just mere competition.
My university has a placement center that I recently found out about. I will most likely try that out before the next semester starts. Officially, we don't have a ingrained internship program like some major universities. To be fair, my first school did not have an intern matching program...
