12V Wind Turbine - Voltage question

It's done mechanically, I'm presuming by the design of the Wind Vane since it has a gap in the centre of it. Probably aerodynamically built that way.

12V Wind Turbine - Voltage question

My turbine actually does this. If the wind gets to high, it steers it out of the wind, and if the blades rotate to quickly, the electromagnetic brakes kick in.

12V Wind Turbine - Voltage question

Using MOSFETS? hmmm, I've never used anything other than diodes for rectification. Something like this maybe? (second picture)

12V Wind Turbine - Voltage question

@OmCheeto thanks! I was actually going to build a VAWT using one of these alternators (I think they're delco, I'll check later). I used a bicycle wheel and a 200cm fan belt to get my ratio. I think it was 1:10. The only thing that stopped me, is the fact that it wasn't easy turning that wheel...

12V Wind Turbine - Voltage question

I couldn't think of the correct name, so I thought of something which sort of resembles it, haha. I see what you did there also *sigh* haha. There are some sites which sell magnets which could potentially fit. There's videos on YouTube of people doing it, and text based websites of people...

12V Wind Turbine - Voltage question

You're absolutely right, I'd still be stuck with a high speed requirement, in this case, a lot higher. The easiest would be to just get a PMA or build one. I actually have an alternator disassembled and just needs the claws being opened to fit a donut magnet in there.

12V Wind Turbine - Voltage question

If you get an alternator and begin to rotate its shaft by using a drill for example - making sure that there is a bulb in series with the input where the dashlight connection would go, then when it gets up to speed, you'll feel a big torque in which the bulb will begin to go out, since its...

12V Wind Turbine - Voltage question

I actually have two vehicle alternators, but can't get past the issue of it causing a high amount of torque when it's trying to excite is magnetic field. I thought they'd only be useful for hydro, since after it's got past that 'high torque', it carries on rotating easily while generating...

12V Wind Turbine - Voltage question

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I was wondering sending it back and try to find another turbine that generates around the same but at a lower RPM, although I don't think I will without the price getting higher and higher. As for the turbines current position, its not in a good place like I said...

12V Wind Turbine - Voltage question

Ah I see. When you mean damage the alternator, is that because its spinning too fast? It has electro magnetic breaking built in (unless that's down to you for breaking it manually).

12V Wind Turbine - Voltage question

Hi, Thanks for your replies. I have seen the turbine reach 8A, not sure at what voltage, but most likely 17v, which gives us about 130watts (from the top of my head). That was only for about a second before the massive gust of wind died down and dropped it to 6A and back down to 0. That was by...

12V Wind Turbine - Voltage question

Hi, I have this wind turbine (http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/251320008073?nav=WATCHING_ACTIVE&skus=Output:12V&varId=550270984212) in the UK, wall mounted about 18ft, its not in the best position, but it still turns pretty fast, enough to hear the blades spinning from inside, and for it to generate...

    Wind Turbine - 3 Phase-AC to DC

Hi mike, Thanks for the reply! I didn't know I was losing that much, ouch indeed! I'm going to get myself a charge controller for about £42 - just so I can charge this leisure battery up. That's until I can buy a bank of deep cycle marines.

    Wind Turbine - 3 Phase-AC to DC

It was just to test to see if it works, which it obviously does. I haven't had time to drill the holes into the wall yet to mount my controller (when I get one) etc, so that's this Saturday job. As for now, its just on an open circuit connected to nothing... Which is a shame, all that power...

    Wind Turbine - 3 Phase-AC to DC

Sure. Today in the UK, its REALLY windy, so this thing is flying around. This is the wind turbine - http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/251320008073?nav=WATCHING_ACTIVE&skus=Output:12V&varId=550270984212 And this is the rectifier - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008R50M9Y/?tag=pfamazon01-20

    Wind Turbine - 3 Phase-AC to DC

Hi, I have a 300-400w wind turbine which generates 3-Phase AC @ 12v 33.33Amps Maximum. The wires are colour coded Red, Black, Blue. I have a 3-Phase AC to DC rectifier which can handle up to 1200v @ 50A. Currently I have it connected like so; Red, Blue, Black. I'm wondering, does it matter...

Rotor Disassembly from Vehicle Alternator - How?

Hi, Thanks for the reply. Unfortuantely I don't have any industrial machines to work with. I'm assuming you mean the middle metal shaft running through is meant to be pushed out therefore it'll come apart?

Rotor Disassembly from Vehicle Alternator - How?

Good evening, Before I start, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I wasn't sure where to post such a question. I have an car alternator which I'm going to be experimenting with to generate electricity from the wind. It's a GM Valeo model, possibly taken out of a Vauxhall. Right now...

Solar - Grid Tie - Energy meter increases?

Unfortunately no. By that statement, I meant if the inverter was generating 30watts of power, then the live energy usage on the meter would increase by 30. If it was generating 70watts, then it'll add 70watts to the number etc... E.g If the house is drawing 600Watts, and I turn on my...

Solar - Grid Tie - Energy meter increases?

Ah ok then. In that case, i have a meter which looks like http://www.robertprice.co.uk/robblog/images/electricity_meter.jpg [Broken] - although my meter doesn't have (Multirate) written on it. The meter has a red L.E.D that flashes every now and again. It increases rapidly if a heavy load is...

Solar - Grid Tie - Energy meter increases?

Hi, So I trialed a 400W grid tie inverter which I had laying about to experiment with lowering the amount of energy the house is drawing from the grid with a single 100W solar panel I have on the roof to charge some batteries. I have a "smart meter" which measures how much power the house is...

How long can I run my computer using an Inverter?

Thanks for the help! The computer is only a server and is idle nearly all the time. It has 2 HDD's in there. Since I can barely afford anything, It'll me a while to get batteries. I'm setting up a small solar system in my room with at least 1-2 20W Solar panels on the roof.

How long can I run my computer using an Inverter?

A crude estimate would be satisfactory. The specs for my inverter is here. The computer itself has a 200W power supply, but sits there idle. The computer is a Dell Optiplex 210L. So let's say it utilizes... 100 watts. That would mean that it would be 0.10kWh. 0.10kWh X 12 hours would be...

How long can I run my computer using an Inverter?

Forgive me for the inadequate information provided. If you can tell me what you need from me in order for the calculations to be done, then I'll try and give you that information, however, I do not know anything else other than what I've said since I just got given the battery.

How long can I run my computer using an Inverter?

Good Evening, I have a 12V Car battery which supplies 85Amps. I have a 500W Inverter with a peak of 1000W. One of my computers which I want to run has a 200W power Supply. I would like to know how long I can power this for 12 hours and 24 hours. If the battery cannot power it for that long...

Converting Modifed Sine Wave to Sine Wave

When applying power to the computer, It acts like it is "pulsing". If I turn the power supply off on the computer, it has a continuous humming noise and the inverter fan spins up. However, when I turn on the switch, it starts pulsing again. I'm not sure how exactly modified it is, but I do...

Converting Modifed Sine Wave to Sine Wave

Good evening, I bought my self my first Inverter rated at 500W which has a peak rate of 1000W (1kW) maximum. Since some devices such as my main computer for one takes 600W, It does not like the modified sine wave. I was wondering if there is a way to somehow 'convert' the modified sine wave...

Electro-Magnet with a Car Battery Help

Ah ok then. Thanks for the info and site! If I wanted to create this magnet, when I say would it be safe of doing it directly, Wire to terminals? Or would I need to have at least 404ft of 14gauge copper wire to compensate for the voltage it is giving out?
