2 wires will parallel current

  1. Oct 14, 2009 #1
    1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data

In the picture below, the two wires carry current i1 and i2, respectively, with positive current to the right. The charge q is positive and has velocity v to the right.

If i2 = 0 and i1 is greater than zero, then the force on q points into the page.
If i1 = 0 and i2 is greater than zero, then the magnetic field near charge q points into the page.
    If i2 = - i1 then the force on q equals zero.
If i1 = 0 and i2 is greater than zero then the force on q is south.
If i1 = - i2, then the wires repel each other.
If i1 is less than i2, then the force on q is south..
If v = 0, then the force on q is zero.

    2. Relevant equations

    right hand rule

    3. The attempt at a solution
If i2 = 0 and i1 is greater than zero, then the force on q points into the page. T
If i1 = 0 and i2 is greater than zero, then the magnetic field near charge q points into the page. F
    If i2 = - i1 then the force on q equals zero.T
If i1 = 0 and i2 is greater than zero then the force on q is south.T
    If i1 = - i2, then the wires repel each other.F
If i1 is less than i2, then the force on q is south..T
    If v = 0, then the force on q is zero.T

Could you explain your answers for c) and e) ?

I assume "south" means down as I look at the page, right?

yes, south means down the page...

    C) true, parallel currents attract each other...?
E)false, because the wires produce a mag. out of page...?

Not sure I'm understanding your answers. Could you paste in c) and e) questions, along with your reasoning on each?
