A followup question about SMPSes

  1. Apr 4, 2009 #1
This is a question about the so marketed "boutique" ATX power supply I was investigating in an earlier post - I was looking at the primary side of the supply and besides the terrible soldering on the ground bus I noticed that the capacitor filtering on the input side consisted only of a single 330uF 450 volt capacitor. I'm no expert in SMPS design, but that doesn't seem like much for a supply rated at 550 watts. I've seen 300 watt supplies with 680uF on the primary side. However, this supply supposedly has power factor correction, perhaps that requires a smaller input cap?
