Can I Pursue a Career in Physics Research with Just a High School Background?

I am finishing up my last year of high school. I do a stupid amount of physics in my spare time, so I think I can catch on to things fairly quickly. I will be doing a physics undergraduate degree next year and want to attempt to go into research eventually. I desperately hold onto my idealized schemes while I still can.
