In summary, astronomers have discovered a long comet-like tail behind a star named Mira using a NASA space telescope. This is the first time the tail has been seen, making it a unique and exciting discovery. Further research may reveal new information about galactic dust and gas density and dark matter.

August 15, 2007: Astronomers using a NASA space telescope, the Galaxy Evolution Explorer, have spotted an amazingly long comet-like tail behind a star streaking through space. The star, named Mira after the Latin word for "wonderful," has been a favorite of astronomers for about 400 years, yet this is the first time the tail has been seen.

...Nothing like this has ever been seen before around a star. [continued]

Been reading /. ?

It's a pretty interesting observation, so I look forward to seeing whether more comes of it.. for example, will it give new information about galactic dust/gas density and dark matter?

I know it's there to get everyone's attention but, "comet's tail"? Come on, this is a non-GD forum...

It was the news report headline. Relax.

What is a "star with a comet's tail"?

A "star with a comet's tail" refers to a phenomenon where a star appears to have a long, glowing tail trailing behind it, similar to a comet. This is caused by the star's interaction with its surrounding environment, such as a stellar wind or the presence of a nearby star or planet.

How common are stars with comet tails?

Stars with comet tails are relatively rare, as they require specific conditions and interactions to occur. However, they have been observed in various stages of a star's life, from young protostars to evolved stars nearing the end of their lives.

What causes a star to have a comet tail?

A star's comet tail is caused by its interaction with its surrounding environment. This can include the star's own stellar wind, which can be influenced by magnetic fields and rotation, or interactions with nearby objects such as planets or other stars.

Can stars with comet tails be seen with the naked eye?

It is highly unlikely for a star with a comet tail to be visible to the naked eye. Most of these phenomena are only detectable through advanced telescopes and imaging techniques. However, some rare cases of stars with extremely long and bright tails have been observed by amateur astronomers.

What can studying stars with comet tails tell us about the universe?

Studying stars with comet tails can provide valuable insights into the physical processes and interactions that occur in space. It can also help us understand the evolution of stars and their environments, and the role they play in shaping the universe.
