Detecting Departure: Monitoring Conversation Participants

In summary, to know if the other participant has left the conversation, you can check if they have stopped posting. However, their name may still appear in the conversation participant list, causing confusion. The only other way to know for sure is if they explicitly state that they are leaving the thread. Generally, leaving a conversation is only necessary when there are multiple participants. If there are only two participants, leaving the conversation may be pointless as ignoring further messages will have the same result. Leaving the conversation will simply remove it from your conversation list.

Not unless they post that they are leaving the thread.

Usually leaving a conversation is only needed when there are 2 or more participants.

Then leaving the conversation is quite pointless, you can simply ignore further messages, with the same result.
If you leave it with "accept further messages" leaving the conversation does nothing (apart from cleaning up) because you get in again if there are new messages.
