I guess it depends a little on the specifics of the application and what cars the OP has on hand to pick to match the load. But yeah, you're right - if it is an option, you don't want the generator much bigger than the max load.

On our farm we have one of those PTO generators to run the place when the power goes out. It's about 50kW, but we need the power to keep the milk coolers cool...

We had to get a special disconnect installed to switch the farm from the mains to the generator which was fairly pricey. I suppose if you didn't have a tractor, you could use a car and somehow attach the drive shaft to the generator. I would imagine you wouldn't get the fuel savings that our diesel tractor gets (540 rpm PTO speed). I think a gas engine would be lacky in the torque department because the tractor really grunts when it's loaded up.
