So, this thread is about lyrics to songs. Post here what lyrics you find especially beautiful. You don't have to post the entire song, but you can also post the part that strikes you the most.

An explanation for why you like it would also be interesting.

And all we ask is that you don't forget
Cause the wars not over when the fighting ends
There's a part of us that will always be
Just boys in a hole with our M-16s

When the moon is full and my only companion is my dog sitting next to me on the bed of my truck, I often remember those days when I was just a boy trying to do what I thought was right. I think of my friends who came back and had a hard time adjusting, and those who never came back. In the end, we were all just kids.

There may well be songs with more poetic lyrics than this, but I haven't heard them:

Your lips were like a red and ruby chalice,
Warmer than the Summer night.
The clouds were like an alabaster palace,
Rising to a snowy height.
Each star its own Aurora Borealis,
Suddenly you held me tight,
I could see the midnight sun.

I can't explain the silver rain that found me,
Or was that a moonlit veil?
The music of the universe around me,
Or was that a nightingale?
And then your arms miraculously found me,
Suddenly the sky turned pale,
I could see the midnight sun.

Was there such a night?
It's still a thrill I don't quite believe;
But after you were gone
There was still some stardust on my sleeve!

The flame of it may dwindle to an ember,
And the stars forget to shine,
And we may see the meadow in December,
Icy white and crystalline.
But oh, my darlin', always I'll remember
When your lips were close to mine,
And I saw the midnight sun.The Johnny Mercer song "The Midnight Sun"

Oh let the sun beat down upon my face, stars to fill my dream
I am a traveler of both time and space, to be where I have been
To sit with elders of the gentle race, this world has seldom seen
They talk of days for which they sit and wait and all will be revealed

Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace, whose sounds caress my ear
But not a word I heard could I relate, the story was quite clear
Oh, oh.

Oh, I been flying... mama, there ain't no denyin'
I've been flying, ain't no denyin', no denyin'

All I see turns to brown, as the sun burns the ground
And my eyes fill with sand, as I scan this wasted land
Trying to find, trying to find where I've been.

Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace, like thoughts inside a dream
Heed the path that led me to that place, yellow desert stream
My Shangri-La beneath the summer moon, I will return again
Sure as the dust that floats high in June, when movin' through Kashmir.

Oh, father of the four winds, fill my sails, across the sea of years
With no provision but an open face, along the straits of fear
Ohh.

When I'm on, when I'm on my way, yeah
When I see, when I see the way, you stay-yeah

Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, when I'm down...
Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, well I'm down, so down
Ooh, my baby, oooh, my baby, let me take you there

Let me take you there. Let me take you there

Please give me a second grace
Please give me a second face
I've fallen far down
The first time around
Now I just sit on the ground in your way

Now if it's time to recompense for what's done
Come, come sit down on the fence in the sun
And the clouds will roll by
And we'll never deny
It's really too hard for to fly.

Please tell me your second name
Please play me your second game
I've fallen so far
For the people you are
I just need your star for a day.

So come, come ride in my my street-car by the bay
For now I must know how fine you are in your way
And the sea sure as i
But she won't need to cry
For it's really too hard for to fly.

Dance Me to the End of Love by Leonard Cohen

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic 'til I'm gathered safely in
Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Oh let me see your beauty when the witnesses are gone
Let me feel you moving like they do in Babylon
Show me slowly what I only know the limits of
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to the wedding now, dance me on and on
Dance me very tenderly and dance me very long
We're both of us beneath our love, we're both of us above
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to the children who are asking to be born
Dance me through the curtains that our kisses have outworn
Raise a tent of shelter now, though every thread is torn
Dance me to the end of love

Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic till I'm gathered safely in
Touch me with your naked hand or touch me with your glove
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love
Dance me to the end of love

For your heart is like a flower as it grow/
It's the rain not just the sun which helps it bloom/

It is the lyrics from Noah and the Whale's Shape of My Heart.
I recommend listening to the song before reading why I enjoy this particular part.
I personally think these are some beautiful lyrics, because it portrays the "cliche scaffold" that There is always good times and bad times and it isn't the good time which make us a better person but the worst of times also, I think this is something that isn't only beautiful, but true.

Tristania - Lethean River excerpt

Ardency of life forsakened
Time will gather the source of thy secrecies
Ardency of life forsakened
In swarthy hours thou ponder still

Invoke thy aeons in a dream
Entrancing sleep, profound and prolix
Estranged to life's utility
Bequest thy endurance in the times of lethargic

Gesture of an Argentine moisture
Like snow upon the riverine
Gesture of an Argentine moisture
So sore upon congeal skin

Lead me down in wailing hours
to the riverside
Reveal to me thy secrecies
Hidden in the wan deep of thy infinite mourning
Lethean River carry me beneath thy riverine

I'm partial to "Dinah Moe Humm", but I can't repeat any of the lyrics here.
Favourite song of all time is "Born To Run", so of course the lyrics of that are important to me. Also "Stumbling' In" by Suzie Q and Chris Norman.

"Expecting To Fly"

There you stood
on the edge of your feather,
Expecting to fly.
While I laughed,
I wondered whether
I could wave goodbye,
Knowin' that you'd gone.
By the summer it was healing,
We had said goodbye.
All the years
we'd spent with feeling
Ended with a cry,
Babe, ended with a cry,
Babe, ended with a cry.

I tried so hard to stand
As I stumbled
and fell to the ground.
So hard to laugh as I fumbled
And reached for the love I found,
Knowin' it was gone.
If I never lived without you,
Now you know I'd die.
If I never said I loved you,
Now you know I'd try,
Babe, now you know I'd try.
Babe, now you know I'd try,
Babe.

It is the lyrics from Noah and the Whale's ...

And though I don't know your real name
Your real age, or your shoe size
I will leave this bedroom chair
And this keyboard behind

And I will love you in reality and dreams
And I will love you in reality and dreams

Except I know the shoe size of all the PF sisters - it's size 8!

A beautiful song about Alzheimer's:

The World Is Water - Krista Detor

We’ll take the boat from mooring
And on the isle we’ll hide
We’ll stay there til the morning
And greet the evening tide

Did you bring the bread, dear?
It’s so far to go
In the boat, the bread, dear
You forgot, I know
Still I love you so

CHORUS:
On the wind I hear them call
But the world is water and that is all
That is all

Would you like a glass of wine?
And we’ll toast the moon
Yes, we should have a glass of wine
Did you leave it in your room?

Give me your hand, it's dark here
I will build a fire
Give me your hand, come sit here
You are my one desire
You are my one desire

CHORUS:
On the wind I hear them call
But the world is water and that is all
That is all

These long days are weary
This long way from him
But I’ll wait on the water
Long as fish can swim

If I go, will you wait for me
I’ll come back by and by
So I will wait here by the sea
Long as birds can fly
Long as birds can fly

CHORUS:
On the wind I hear your call
But the world is water and that is all
That is all

I will always find you
That is one true thing
So I will stay and call to him
Long as I can sing
Long as I can sing

Suo Gan - Traditional Welsh Lullaby

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suo_Gan

Huna blentyn ar fy mynwes
Clyd a chynnes ydyw hon;
Breichiau mam sy'n dynn amdanat,
Cariad mam sy dan fy mron;

Ni chaiff dim amharu'th gyntun,
Ni wna undyn â thi gam;
Huna'n dawel, annwyl blentyn,
Huna'n fwyn ar fron dy fam.

Huna'n dawel, heno, huna,
Huna'n fwyn, y tlws ei lun;
Pam yr wyt yn awr yn gwenu,
Gwenu'n dirion yn dy hun?

Ai angylion fry sy'n gwenu,
Arnat ti yn gwenu'n llon,
Tithau'n gwenu'n ôl dan huno,
Huno'n dawel ar fy mron?

Paid ag ofni, dim ond deilen
Gura, gura ar y ddôr;
Paid ag ofni, ton fach unig
Sua, sua ar lan y môr;

Huna blentyn, nid oes yma
Ddim i roddi iti fraw;
Gwena'n dawel yn fy mynwes
Ar yr engyl gwynion draw.

Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to me
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms

Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
I've witnessed all your suffering
As the battle raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

There's some really great lyrics here, but could you please give the name of the song and, if possible, the name of the lyricist or the group/individual associated with the song?

"Dire Straits - "Brothers in Arms" , "Suo Gan - Traditional Welsh Lullaby"

Thanks MarneMath and jedishirfu

This is a popular Motown tune sung by Stevie Wonder and many others. I like it because every single line of it is true for me.

"For Once In My Life"

For once in my life I have someone who needs me
Someone I've needed so long
For once, unafraid, I can go where life leads me
And somehow I know I'll be strong

For once I can touch what my heart used to dream of
Long before I knew
Someone warm like you
Would make my dreams come true

For once in my life I won't let sorrow hurt me
Not like it's hurt me before
For once, I have something I know won't desert me
I'm not alone anymore

For once, I can say, this is mine, you can't take it
As long as I know I have love, I can make it
For once in my life, I have someone who needs me

Alcest "Autre Temps" (Another Time)
English Translation, traditionally in french

"A faraway prayer carried by the evening wind
Animates the leaves in their languorous dance
It's the hymn of the old trees, sung for you
For those somber forests which are now asleep
So many seasons have passed without waiting for us
The golden leaves falling to the ground to die
Will someday come back to life beneath a radiant sky
But our eroded world will remain the same
And tomorrow, you and I will be gone"

Mucc "Shion"
English translation, traditionally in Japanese

"A young and fragile flower
And the cry of a lonely firefly
Window ablaze, clear sky turns red
Sun rises and dusk skies are blue

Bound by reason, against war
It's better not to do what we have to
I cannot escape from the noise that is me
And if we return to the Earth we'll want water

Regret for this fading life leads to conflict
Fear of losing understanding leads to disillusion

Let's fly high in the sky
I see you reflected in a flower
I'll give you water when you're sad
The stars sound like falling rain
Ring out, ring out

All my senses failed me long ago
The countless lies we spat out without seeing
Is this praise or not
Rain of humiliation
Now that we are ashamed of arrogance
To say we can't see is nonsense

Let's fly high in the sky
I see you reflected in a flower
"Don't shrivel up"
We call is an aster daisy
The wish lays deep in my heart
This voice"

I'm just naming songs, because it's so easy to Google the lyrics that I see no reason to use up PF server space.
I don't know whether or not this can be considered "beautiful", but I really love "Total Eclipse of the Heart".

Hey, I remember that! It goes like this:
"when did spazzing out qualify as a dance?
kneeling down like I want to throw up...
what the effin' crap
that angel guy just felt me up!"
http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/f0...e-of-the-heart-literal-video-version-original

But (a little bit)more seriously, I like these two very much:

Vienna Teng - Eric's song(selection) said:
Strange how you know inside me
I measure the time and I stand amazed
Strange how I know inside you
My hand is outstretched toward the damp of the haze

And of course I forgive
I've seen how you live
Like a phoenix you rise from the ashes
You pick up the pieces
And the ghosts in the attic
They never quite leave
And of course I forgive
You've seen how I live
I've got darkness and fears to appease
My voices and analogies
Ambitions like ribbons
Worn bright on my sleeve

Strange how we know each other
...

Tim Minchin - You grew on me said:
You grew on me like a tumour
And you spread through me like malignant melanoma
And now you're in my heart
I should've cut you out back at the start

Now I'm afraid there's no cure for me
No dose of emotional chemotherapy
Can halt my pathetic decline
I should've had you removed back when you were benign

I picked you up like a virus
Like meningococcal meningitis
Now I can't feel my legs
When you're around I can't get out of bed

I've left it too late to risk an operation
I know there's no hope for a clean amputation
The successful removal of you
Would probably kill me too

You grew on me like carcinoma
Crept up on me like untreated glaucoma
Now I find it hard to see
This untreated dose of you has blinded me

I should've consulted my local physician
I'm stuck now forever with this tunnel vision
My periphery is screwed
Wherever I look now, all I see is you

When we first met you seemed fickle and shallow
But my armour was no match for your poison arrow
You are wedged inside my chest
If I tried to take you out now I might bleed to death
I'm feeling short of breath

You grew on me like a tumour
And you spread through me like malignant melanoma
I guess I never knew
How fast a little mole can grow on you

The reason is, that they both encapsulate the very precious kind of love that oftentimes people forget about in favour of the more marketable "romantic love".
