Best Android Science Apps

  1. Oct 25, 2014 #1
This nice thread, Favorite Android Science Apps?, is closed, so I decided to start a continued thread on this topic...

I've recently got me my first Android phone, and I spent yesterday with checking out apps and installing them.
Here are some science/education related apps I've installed (all free), and I also list some rather nice system-related apps. Please share info about your recommended science/education/system apps in this thread, if you like.

I've done some further evaluation of Android apps (all free), and I have replaced some of those posted above with better apps (at least IMO):

I found Compass 360 Pro a little buggy, and I think this compass is better (fast, smooth, and it can display degrees, GPS latitude and longitude):

    PierroX.net - Marine Compass
    http://www.pierrox.net/cmsms/applications/marine-compass.html
    http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.pierrox.mcompass

Zooper Widget is pretty nice, but I liked this more (lots of weather detail and weather forecasting):

    Devexpert Weather & Clock Widget
    http://www.devexpert.net/weather/
    http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devexpert.weather

I've replaced "Tiny Flashlight + LED" with this one:
    Color Flashlight: http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.socialnmobile.hd.flashlight

I've uninstalled SwiftKey Keyboard, since I don't found it better than the default keyboard.

And I've installed and used this system app which I find very nice and useful:
Cheetah Mobile CleanMaster (junk cleaner, memory booster, app manager)
    http://www.cmcm.com/en-us/clean-master/
    http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cleanmaster.mguard

There are some apps that measure magnetic fields.

I've now tried a couple of magnetometers, and I liked these two the best so far:

Mobile Develop Team Magnetic Field Detector (with graphing and vector information)
Spaceware Magnet-O-Meter (with graphing and optional sound function)

I've noticed that when they get close to speaker drivers, they completely freak out, haha!

And some further apps I've tried, which I like:

Iero ElectroDroid (an electronics toolset, quite nice)
    http://electrodroid.it/electrodroid/
    http://play.google.com/store/search?q=pub:Iero&referrer=utm_source=blog_widget
    device-2012-07-06-164823-180x300.png

Chartcross GPS Test (checks and monitors satellites, signal strength and gps location)
    http://www.facebook.com/GpsTest
    http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest

George Sapkin World Factbook (quite extensive country information, quite nice)
    http://plus.google.com/ GeorgeSapkin/posts
    http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.sapk.android.factbook

And I have a couple of more promising apps to check too, so I'll be back...

Time for an update of this thread  (again, only free apps in this post):

    Mathematics

Mathlab - Graphing Calculator (Links: Homepage - Google Play)

    -------------------------------

    Astronomy

3 apps with pretty good ratings:

Escapist Games - Limited Star Chart (Links: Homepage - Google Play)
Smoky Cogs - Night Sky Tools (Links: Homepage - Google Play)
Terminal Eleven - SkyView Free (Links: Homepage - Google Play)

    -------------------------------

    Measuring Devices/Tools

Vieyra Software - Physics Toolbox Suite (Links: Homepage - Google Play)

    My note: A quite cool app, with many measuring devices implemented in the same app (but it also depends on the actual capabilities of your device);

"Useful for education, academia, and industry, this app uses device sensor inputs to collect, record, and export data. in comma separated value (csv) format through a .txt file sent via an e-mail or through Google Drive. All analog data is plotted against elapsed time (or clock time) on a graph. Users can export the data for further analysis in a spreadsheet or plotting tool."

    Tools included:
    1. G-Force Meter - ratio of Fn/Fg
    2. Linear Accelerometer - acceleration
    3. Gyroscope - radial velocity
    4. Barometer - atmospheric pressure
    5. Roller Coaster - G-Force Meter, Linear Accelerometer, Gyroscope, and Barometer
    6. Proximeter - periodic motion and timer
    7. Hygrometer - relative humidity
    8. Thermometer - temperature
    9. Magnetometer - magnetic field intensity
    10. Light Meter - light intensity
    11. Sound Meter - sound intensity
    12. Tone Generator - frequency producer
    13. Orientation - azimuth, roll, pitch
    14. Stroboscope
    15. GPS

PC Mehanik - Smart Tools (Links: Homepage (not in English) - Google Play)

My note: A pretty nice tool box, with 30 tools in one app, e.g. ruler, flashlight, compass, stopwatch, etc etc.

A must have system app is Android Assistant
    WiFi Analyzer is useful
Navigation: OsmAnd+ will do topo maps (maybe that wasn't free --- not sure)

Astronomy: Heavens Above (I like watching the space station, iridium flares!!, and counting satellites)
    NASA Space Weather
    NASA App
    NASA Earth Now

There are a bunch of free Audio and FFT analyzer programs, each with it's own strengths and weaknesses.
    SpectralView Analyzer
    Audio Analyzer Free

And of course, Bejewelled Classic: Anyone beat my 530,000,000, level 123 score? (just felt like bragging)
