Calculate Fuel Consumption for Cars: Tips & Advice

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating fuel consumption for cars, specifically in the context of developing a physics engine for a car game. A user named Alex seeks advice on how to compute fuel consumption based on engine details and torque curves. The method outlined involves filling the gas tank, resetting the trip odometer, driving until refueling, and then dividing the distance traveled by the gallons used to determine gas mileage. Additionally, it is noted that fuel consumption correlates directly with the horsepower produced by the engine.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic automotive mechanics
  • Familiarity with torque curves
  • Knowledge of horsepower calculations
  • Experience with physics engines in game development
NEXT STEPS
  • Research how to calculate fuel consumption using engine torque curves
  • Explore the relationship between horsepower and fuel efficiency
  • Learn about implementing physics engines in game development
  • Investigate advanced fuel consumption models for realistic simulations
USEFUL FOR

Game developers, automotive engineers, and anyone interested in accurately simulating vehicle dynamics and fuel consumption in software applications.

If you're talking about gas mileage...

Fill your car up. Reset the trip odometer. Drive until you need gas again without putting any additional gas to top off the tank. Fill up again, noting how many gallons it takes to fill up. Write down the mileage on the trip odometer. Divide odometer's reading by gallons of gas to get Gas mileage

thanks for your help but I need a calculation to work it out. I am writing physics engine for a car game so I have all the engine details and its torque curve. I read that fule consumption has a direct relation with how much horse power the engine is producing.

With these engine details can I calculate its fuel consumption?

Any help would be great

Thanks
alex
