Calculate the load

  1. Jul 2, 2012 #1
    1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data

    A mild steel column has a cross section of 100m by 50mm. Assuming a safety factor of 6 calculate the load that it can safely support

    2. Relevant equations

    W=A*δ

    3. The attempt at a solution

    δ=470 N/mm2*0,1667= 78,34 mm2
    A=100mm*50mm=5000mm2

    W =5000* 78,34=391700/1000=391,7 N???????

    Please check my result:D

    you mean 78 N/mm^2
    about 400 kN, yes, assuming a short column and a FS of 6 against what appears to be an ultimate stress of a mild steel.
