In summary, the conversation discusses the need for a program that can read .CAM files and extract measurements from them. The speaker mentions the importance of verifying the size of elliptical holes before cutting and suggests that having a reader program would be beneficial for this task. They also mention the difficulty of finding a program due to the file extension not being unique. The speaker clarifies that the .CAM files are produced by Fast CAM, not a digital camera.

Are there any program that be be used to read a .CAM file and pull measurements from the program.

Where I work we cut some elliptical holes that must have their size verified before cut. It would be benefical to have a reader program that let's you view the plot (not just the code) and take measurements off of it. That way someone who is not trained to write .CAM files can determine if the cut size for a previously written program is correct.

Can you be more specific about the source of your .CAM files? This type of file extension is unfortunately not unique.

The files are produced by fast cam, not a digital camera.

1. What are .CAM files?

.CAM files are computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) files that contain data for creating and verifying machine tool paths. These files are typically created using specialized software and are used in the production of parts and components.

2. How can I open and view a .CAM file?

To open and view a .CAM file, you will need CAM software or a CAM viewer program. Some common CAM software includes Mastercam, SolidCAM, and GibbsCAM. These programs allow you to view, edit, and verify the machine tool paths contained in the .CAM file.

3. What is the process for taking measurements from a .CAM file?

To take measurements from a .CAM file, you will need to use a measuring tool such as a caliper or micrometer. You can measure features such as hole diameter, length, and position by comparing the dimensions in the .CAM file to the physical object.

4. Can I use .CAM files for elliptical hole verification?

Yes, .CAM files can be used for elliptical hole verification. The .CAM file will contain data for the machine tool path used to create the elliptical hole, and you can use this data to verify the dimensions and position of the hole.

5. Are there any potential errors or discrepancies when using .CAM files for measurement and verification?

Yes, there can be potential errors or discrepancies when using .CAM files for measurement and verification. These errors can occur if the .CAM file is not accurately created or if there are variations in the machine tool used to create the part. It is important to carefully verify the dimensions and measurements from the .CAM file with physical measurements to ensure accuracy.
