...Considering there is NO dielectric breakdown or breaking of glass/dielectric.....

Can there be a corona discharge ever around a charged glass/dielectric without a conductor in the vicinity?
For instance; take a single-electrode glass high-vacuum tube, charge it to high voltage like 4 millions. Electrons will be emitted from the electrode in the vacuum, but will there be a CORONA discharge in the free air outside and around the glass-tube?

Regards
Peter

.No, there will not be a corona discharge around a charged glass/dielectric without a conductor in the vicinity. Corona discharges require a conductive medium such as air or water to occur, and since glass/dielectrics are insulators, they cannot create a path for the electrons to move along.

1. What is corona discharge?

Corona discharge is a phenomenon that occurs when an electric field is strong enough to ionize the air surrounding a charged object, resulting in the formation of a glowing plasma around the object.

2. How does corona discharge occur?

Corona discharge occurs when the electric field strength exceeds a certain threshold, causing the air molecules to lose electrons and become ionized. This ionization creates a conductive path for the electric current to flow, leading to the formation of a glowing plasma around the charged object.

3. Can corona discharge occur around any charged object?

Yes, corona discharge can occur around any charged object, as long as the electric field strength is high enough to cause ionization of the surrounding air. This includes charged glass or dielectric materials.

4. What are the potential hazards of corona discharge?

Corona discharge can produce ozone, which can be harmful to human health. It can also damage sensitive electronic components and cause power outages in high voltage systems.

5. How can corona discharge be prevented?

To prevent corona discharge, the electric field strength around a charged object can be reduced by increasing the distance between the object and any nearby surfaces. Additionally, using materials with lower dielectric constants can also help prevent corona discharge.
