Changing Industries

  1. Dec 16, 2011 #1
How common is it for engineers to change industries? Like, say your a mechanical design engineer and you've worked in the oil&gas industry for 8 years, and you want to start working as a robotics design engineer...or something more practical, but just a different industry.

Real common! Research whatever you plan to switch into, and rewrite your resume to emphasize your talents vis a vis the new field. For example, maths underlying electronics engineering for the most part have precisely corresponding maths in mechanical engineering, optics, etc. A leap from mechanical design to robotics would be a small one.
