Chapter in MSc/PhD thesis for general public

  1. Jul 11, 2013 #1

I'm writing up my thesis at the moment and I'd like to include a chapter that is a summary of my project intended for the general public. This would use simple language and probably focus more on background topics instead of my specific results. I think it would be a good exercise in effectively communicating science and might give my family some idea of what I do all day.

Anyway, this is nonstandard at my university so I need to run it by the Graduate Studies Faculty. I'd like to have an example of this sort of chapter to show them. Does anyone know of a school where this is common practice? Or an example of a thesis that does this? It would be more than just a non-technical abstract, probably 4 or 5 pages. I remember coming across one awhile ago, from somewhere in the US I believe--that's where I got the idea!
