Classification of Electronic Materials and SD memory card (noob question)

  1. Sep 11, 2010 #1
As far as I can tell, semiconductors seem to be built using by injecting elements into silicon lattices. These elements seem to all be located near silicon. So, I answered: covalent bonds, because it seems to remind me of a polymer.

However, a physical chip reminds me far more of a ceramic material, and that would be ionic bonding. So, as you can see, I'm a little confused and would appreciate some help.

I'm not really even sure where to start with this question. I think this would either be classified as a composite or ceramic material. I assume that if I can answer the above question that I would be able to then answer this question.
