Containing gas Ions in space

Main Question or Discussion Point

If you had charged gas particles in space, they would attempt to spread apart and fill the empty space vacuum correct?

-So if you had an open container in space (like a soda can open at one end), the charged particles would naturally try to escape the container as far as I understand.

-Now if you had an electric/magnetic field located at the open end that repelled the ions, it would be synonymous to having a wall there (the same as having a closed container) right??
And the ions would be trapped inside?
