Why is there so much crackpot-advertising at the top of the main page?

wolram said:There is a magic trick that makes them disappear, you only have to send a
meager sum to Greg, and hey presto all gone.
EL said:Yeah, but then I cannot save everyone else from it! :tongue2:
klusener said:well, if I did propose a way to get rid of the ads here, would it be against the forum rules?
Probably, but I would guess that quite a few people already have With firefox you can even block out the yellow stripe at the top of each thread. Not that I would know anything about thatklusener said:well, if I did propose a way to get rid of the ads here, would it be against the forum rules?
klusener said:yeah, that's what i was going to propose, using the adblock extension in ff. Normally, if you just block the iframe it comes back again, the next time you visit pf, but if you go into the options and just type in http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com [Broken] in the preferences, no google ads ever show up on the browser again.
mattmns said:klusener, you don't even need to install adblock to block out a big chunk of ads. Personally I have heard that people can use a css file to block out a big chunk of ads (like 99% or so). I have heard too, that one can check out a "critic of google" (a company that "watches" google ) on how to block out google ads with this css file. Also, to remove objects, I use, I mean, I have heard "remove it permanently" is a good firefox extension for doing this kind of thing. Although adblock probably works well too.

Just out of curiosity, how much would you guys be willing to pay to get rid of the ads? You're already going to some trouble to avoid them - would you be willing to just pay some money and save your time?
EL said:Well, I'm not really bothered myself about the ads. It's just that new people comming here may be confused. If they are non-physicists they may believe the ads are good stuff. If they are physicists they may get the impression this whole site is crackpot.
Anyway, I can understand that Greg needs money...
Well, I did! :tongue2:wolram said:and fizzysists are are to blinkered to notice the adds

I think that's a good point. Someone mentioned the other day that you can PM Greg about any questionable ads, and he can block them.EL said:Well, I'm not really bothered myself about the ads. Is there a way to be behind each otherhonestrosewater said:Yes, woolie, I'm always behind you. I like the view.
Apparently you do not see the adds. There are very many crackpot adds. It would be too much to post the url of every seemingly crackpot add. There are just too many. For example these are the the four links on top of the main page that I get now (I guess that only one of them is not a crackpot add):Gokul43201 said:Will people seeing any crackpot ads please post the url's here so Greg can remove the ads ?

Only #3 might not be crackpot, and that's only because I don't know what it is.
