The story contains this tidbit:

Before the cyclone hit, the government had only put out “storm news,” saying the cyclone would travel at about 30 miles an hour, whereas it struck at almost four times that speed.
I assume thats comparing apples and oranges.

The real news is the reluctance of the government to issue visas to would be aid workers.
MSNBC said:
Myanmar's ruling junta, which has spurned the international community for decades, appealed for aid on Monday. But the U.S. State Department said Myanmar's government had not granted permission for a Disaster Assistance Response Team into the country.

Terrible loss of life and destruction, one can only wonder if this junta has a care.
