Homework Help: Diffraction problem help

  1. Mar 19, 2008 #1
    1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data

Why a grating is prefferes over a single slit for obtaining diffraction pattern ?

    2. Relevant equations

    3. The attempt at a solution

While a single slit will create a diffraction pattern having multiple ones from the same source will make it more visible, the coherent light waves with interfere to give you a pattern of light and dark regions if projected onto a white surface. At least that would be my thinking.

A single slit gives a broad pattern for each wavelength.
    A grating give narrow lines.
