Homework Help: Distributed mass pendulum

    1. The problem statement, all variables and given/known data

    A pendulum of length L has a distributed mass density r. Let the gravity be g and the initial angle pi/2, measured with respect to vertical. Will the pendulum remain straight when released from this configuration?

    2. Relevant equations

    None.

    3. The attempt at a solution

    I think it is enough to consider the period T=T(m,L) of a generic pendulum and thus each point of the distributed mass pendulum "wants" to have that period, so the pendulum cannot remain straight.
