In summary, Norwegians are proud of their country for a few reasons. First, Norway is one of the three big cultural countries in the world. Second, Norwegians are proud of their history of commerce and capitalism. Third, Norwegians are proud of their literary tradition, with some of the world's best writers including Henry James, John Steinbeck and Ernest Hemingway. Finally, Norwegians are proud of their modern film industry.

I am from the US and I am proud of the US. Frankly, I can't see why physical features of the land would be something to be proud of, though: Americans didn't build the Grand Canyon.

We built mount rushmore!

I'm American.

Things I'm proud of:

- The legacy of the founding fathers (political, not personal, legacy).
- The great history of commerce and capitalism, hard-work and innovation.
- Henry James, John Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, and many other great 20th century writers.
- The modern motion picture. Hollywood hasn't been too hot lately, but still, I'm a great lover of film, and it wouldn't have gotten far if not for the contribution from my native city.
- The interstate highway system (except the I-40 in Arkansas).
- Silicon Valley, even though it crashed.
- The city of New York. A marvel to behold like no other place I've been.
- The Blue Ridge Mountains. I know we didn't build them, but they are the most gorgeous mountains I will ever see and the place that many of my ancestors were originally descended from. Another marvel to behold.
- Almost everything about California, except that whole stretch between Bakersfield and Sacramento.
- The Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Dodgers, USC Trojans, Philadelphia Flyers, and Philadelphia Eagles (don't ask me why I root for Philly teams, I just do).

Things I'm not proud of:

- Andrew Jackson
- Mormonism
- Overconsumption of natural resources
- The refusal to go metric
- The fact that Los Angeles has never produced a great novelist (I guess anyone with talent gets sucked into screenwriting).
- The Trail of Tears

I'm proud to be born in the United States of America. Because I was born into freedom. While I don't agree with the politics, I am free to read, write or publish anything I wish about my country. If I work hard enough, I can be anything I choose.

I'm going to assume you know that the poster is from the Netherlands, in which case, what do you mean exactly?

Well, Norwegians are stuck up with their own nationalism that we are somehow the nicest guys around, rushing about the world to negotiate in conflicts we don't know a thing about and awarding various peace prizes to this and that person WE feel deserves it.

It's rather cloying, actually...

My old neighbors were of Norwegian descent. Pasty-looking, reclusive Mormons. Aside from them, I had never even heard of a Norwegian until you. Swedes, well they've got hot chicks. Finland had Lasse Viren. I just figured Norway was the name of a glacier.

Okay, I'm kidding. Actually, the Heimskringla is pretty cool. But that really is about all I know of Norway.

1.From what I've heard, the Norwegian chicks are much hotter than the Swedish, but not as hot as the Icelandish ones.

2. You might have heard about Henrik Ibsen as well.
Kind of fashionable playwright in his time.

Don't mock to any one! I have no bad meanings. Only I want to hear how is the thinking of their loyalty to their contry~! And I am interested to know some contries' culture! Is there any practical reasons? I think every nation will have.

Hi, yu_wing_sin:
Of course it is natural to love the country you've been born in and to love the persons you have grown up with and admired!
Do love your country with all your heart!

However, what angered me, was in particular your point 15.
China is an ancient AND modern dynastic power which has subjugated&continues to subjugate many other peoples who might not want themselves to be part of China.

Of course, China is not unique in this behaviour, but I thought a poignant reminder of actual politics of power done by China upon other peoples was in order.

I can say that I'm not too proud to be an american because everyone's pissed off at us and it's because of our stupid government

To keep our contry be united, is our responsibility. If there is no West and America's urge and support to Tibet and Sinkiang, they will not want to separate from China. I also think that you would not hope Norway will be divided, that is every nation's duty.

Like Soviet, it divided into 15 contries, who can feel the pain of Russian? A united contry has its innovation meaning.

It's certainly something to love about your country, though (although the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is a lot more beautiful than the Grand Canyon - size isn't everything).

No, Mt Rushmore isn't something to be proud of anymore than creating the world's biggest billboard would be something to be proud of. (However, having the world's biggest ball of twine is something else entirely... :tongue2: )

I'm most proud of the hard work and courage that went into creating a prosperous nation and of our ability to maintain a government that pretty much stays out of our personal lives. In fact, the second has a lot to do with why hard work by individuals has paid off in the US.

And, of course, of John Steinbeck (that was a good choice, LYN) and Mark Twain.

Least proud - of how we handled Native American tribes. Other countries in the western hemisphere may not have done that great, but driving the native population into near extinction probably puts the US at the bottom of the list. The biggest paradox in this is that a lack of people has historically been one of the US's biggest problems - hence the huge contribution of immigrants in our country.

I couldn't disagree more strongly with you, on several issues here.
However, I think that your original purpose of the thread is so good, that I will not sour it further.

So, I won't post any more on these issues here, OK?

I'm usually proud to be English. When I see something genuinely good that we've done for the world, it gives me a fuzzy warm glow; those Navy boys who rescued that sunken Russian sub today make me proud, apparently there were adult British men just crying their hearts out when the sub popped back up! Lovely. And yeah, who can argue against cricket?! 2 runs baby, 2 runs!

However, I have had a number of moments when I've felt nothing but shame to be a Brit. I was on a flight to Barcelona once where the aeroplane was full of drunk, rowdy Geordies, abusing everyone who went past. I just sunk in my seat, I didn't want anyone to know that I was from the same half of the same country! It was horrible to think that these twats were about to take over such a beautiful and heavily-cultured city for a week just to get pissed, abuse the locals, get sunburnt, and speak English as loudly as possible just because they can.

Nationalism doesn't necessarily lead to prejudice, which i presume you are implying. Only misunderstanding people would be those who, independently of their nationalism, prejudice.

I am most proud of my Korean ancestors, both of my mother and fathers line. Korean society however, my view is 50:50

Things Brits should not be proud of:
1. Yorkshire pudding
2. Worcester sauce
3. The big Queen Victoria statue close to the University of London
4. Fish&chips
5. Guiness
6. Camilla Parker-Bowles
