Dr. Winglees Spacecraft And Weather Modificatio

In summary, the conversation discusses the potential use of a modified spacecraft in geostationary orbit to block out the sun's ionizing radiation and potentially cool sea surface temperatures to limit the power of hurricanes and tornadoes. The idea of a "solar sail" is also mentioned as a potential alternative. The ecological effects and potential consequences of such actions are also considered, with one person arguing that it could counterbalance the heat budget and reverse global warming, while another raises concerns about the unpredictable nature of weather systems and the potential for catastrophic conditions.

I have a neat idea that has been modified. It may work. What if you used such a spacecraft in Geo. orbit to block out the suns ionizing radiation? Would this tend to cool SSTs thus limiting a hurricane or a tornados power? A "Solar Sail" could also work in this application. But, his spacecraft may work better because it has less mass and may add particles to block out the light.

Have you considered the ecological effect of such massive modifications of the weather?

Yes I have and it would counter balance the total heat buget we are currently adding every day to the Earth. It would reverse global warming and give rain in drought stricken areas and eliminate flood prone areas.

Mankind's contribution to the heat energy of the planet is incredibly tiny.

The weather is a chaotic system, and we are unlikely ever to have the degree of measurement and computational power to predict what effects our actions will cause. Very likely, creating a big spot of dramatically lower radiation levels on the Earth will lead to catastrophic conditions.

Likewise taking no action may have the same effect? Look at all those Hurricanes coming. Placing a shadow over one may cause it to get weaker or just cool the SSTs in front of its path.

Pure speculation. We do not support such baseless and unverifiable discussions.
