for class we have to make a car with an egged attached to the front (so its protruding). the car has to be able to stop on its own and travel distances of 6m, 8m, 10m, and one even numbered mystery distance between 5m and 10m. compressed gases, explosives, and premade parts may not be used. i have no idea where to even begin :(

im currently thinking of using rubber bands to turn the axle, but I am not sure if that will be able to go far enough

It probably can be done with elastic bands. A quick measurement of the F and maximum x would give you an idea how much energy can be stored in the prospective elastic and you could compare that to the work needed to pull the car. That way you can choose an appropriate size for the elastic(s) before building.
