I'll do this as an open forum since a poll won't work here.

For me I have to break it down by genre, so

Horror- Stephen King- I know he's been described as a serial horror writer who churns books out without creativity in mind, but I've been reading him since I was 11 and picked up the bachman books.

Science Fiction- Toss up between Asimov- for his foundation series, and Adam's Hitchhiker series.

Fantasy- Anything Tolkien is a classic-Just banged out the simmarrillion 15 years after I first picked up the hobbit. And C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia

Mystery- Not to tout all the classics here, but Sir Aurthur Connan Doyle's Sherlock is an indomitable character.

More to follow..

Game of Thrones was fantastic! I of course loved LOTR. Swan Song is another classic for me and is similar to The Stand.

Liked George RR Martin ever since his "Tuf Voyaging" series.
A more recent favorite is Paolo Bacigalupi "The Windup Girl". Powerful in its breadth of emotion.
