Finite Element Analysis (ABAQUS) Meshing

    I am working on an impact problem that needs to be modeled and analyzed a specific way in ABAQUS. A small cylindrical flat nosed projectile will impact a hard (rigid/undeformable) anvil.

    I am modeling the projectile as 2D axi-symmetric to cut down the run time (since I am only worried about the radius of the projectile at certain axial locations after the impact). I was thinking about meshing the projectile, then specifying an impact velocity to each element (I don't know how to do this however). My problem is, that I need the elements to align at .01 inch increments on the deformed projectile (after impact). If anyone knows how to apply a velocity to each element, or set up a specific mesh with elements/nodes at specified points please let me know.
