    It's an aerodynamic instability. Loading causes the surface to deflect. Eventually it either breaks or bends back. Then it gets going again. Without proper damping the vibration keeps going or gets worse to the point of failure. Pretty much any aerodynamic surface, including propellers and jet fans undergo flutter testing.

    One time i could have crashed a plane, after the engine test i did not switch
    to both mags, when i said to the instructor ( it seems a bit sluggish) he had
    the screaming add dabs :rolleyes: Needless to say our aborted flight ended
    ok, but there is no way i would have crashed, you could put a 152 down on
    some ones lawn :rofl:
