Frictional force of car homework

In summary, frictional force is the resistance force between two surfaces in contact with each other. It is important for cars because it allows for efficient acceleration, deceleration, and turning, as well as maintaining control and stability. The weight of a car affects frictional force, and other factors such as tire type, road condition, and speed can also impact it. To reduce frictional force in a car, one can use tires with less tread, maintain proper tire pressure, drive at a slower speed, and use lubricants on moving parts.

Homework Statement

A dragster reaches 350km/h from rest to 6.2s. If the car is 800kg and generates a driving force of 14000N, find the force of friction acting on the car.

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

350km/h = 97.2m/s

[tex]a=\frac{97.2m/s - 0}{6.2s} = 15.7m/s^2[/tex]

F(friction) = F(net) - F(applied)

= F(net) - 14000N

F(net) = ma
= 800kg x 15.7m/s^2
= 12560N

F(friction) = 12560N - 14000N = -1440N

The solution says 10900N.

What is frictional force?

Frictional force is the resistance force that opposes motion between two surfaces in contact with each other.

Why is frictional force important for cars?

Frictional force is important for cars because it helps the tires grip the road, allowing the car to accelerate, decelerate, and turn efficiently. It also helps in maintaining control and stability of the vehicle.

How does the weight of a car affect frictional force?

The weight of a car affects frictional force because the greater the weight, the greater the force pushing down on the tires, resulting in more friction between the tires and the road.

What factors can affect the frictional force of a car?

Factors that can affect the frictional force of a car include the weight of the car, the type of tires, the condition of the road, and the speed of the car. Other variables such as temperature, surface texture, and air resistance can also impact frictional force.

How can frictional force be reduced in a car?

Frictional force can be reduced in a car by using tires with less tread, maintaining proper tire pressure, and driving at a slower speed. Additionally, using lubricants on moving parts can also help reduce frictional force.
