Gas volume question

  1. Aug 16, 2007 #1
A container has a capacity of V with X mass of gas in it.

I take away half of the gas leaving 0.5 X mass left.

What is the volume of the remaining gas?

What do you think? (Is the container rigid? Does its size change when you remove some gas?)

it's an airtight container, and the size does not change when the gas is removed.

So what do you think happens to the remaining gas in the container? (What's the most distinguishing and basic property of a gas, compared to a liquid or solid?)

Yes. A gas will expand to fill its container.
